| Brief Description: | The original, five-hour German version of Lang's highly influential
and inventive classic, written by his wife, Thea von Harbou. The film
follows the life of crime of raving, gambling, mastermind villain
Mabuse (Rudolf Klein-Rogge), whose organization victimizes well-to-do
post-war German society. Through hypnosis, Mabuse plays with the fate
of his mistress, a public prosecutor, a Countess, and her husband,
using them for his plan of creative destruction. A pulp-sensation
melodrama combined with skillful staging, structuring and social
commentary that raises the film above the limitations of the genre.
