Fei Mu's postwar chamber drama was voted "the greatest Chinese film ever made" multiple times by the Hong Kong Film Awards Association, but was suppressed for years by the Communists on ideological grounds. The story focuses on an unfulfilled wife stuck in a hopeless marriage with an ailing landowner. A doctor is to come treat her husband, and happens to be her childhood love, now a doctor, which further complicates matters. The rubble-filled mise-en-scene perfectly mirrors the heroine's cracked emotional state. "Increasingly claustrophobic and shadowy...closer in mood to Strindberg than Chekhov" (J.
