A handsome crooner sings a sweet love song on a radio broadcast, in
front of a live audience. He's a popular entertainer with a large,
loyal following--particularly among the ladies. However, Grant Murdock
is not what he seems. He's just a "splendid dummy": the stand-in for
Norman Wilder, a hunchback who's fiercely dedicated to music, and who
is actually the one with the velvet voice. The plot of this ironic,
strikingly plotted drama starts rolling when an attractive, ambitious,
but poor young woman, Laura Hamilton, enlists Murdock's advice
regarding her fledgling singing career. It is Wilder who encourages
her talent, and he becomes upset when he senses the egotistical,
womanizing Murdock is about to seduce her. Featuring a soulful,
memorable performance by Ralph Forbes and a ravishing Gail Patrick in
one of her earliest screen roles.
