Born in Florence in 1888, Francesca Bertini made her film debut in a
1907 short about a beauty contestant, Goddess of the Sea. Exactly 70
years later she starred in Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 as Burt
Lancaster's mother. Temperamental, capricious, willful, egocentric,
amazingly elegant and beautiful, Francesca was one of the silver
screen's last divas. In this touching, funny and wondrous portrait of
a unique woman, scenes from many of her classic films are juxtaposed
with interviews of the geniuses of Italian cinema--such as the late
Sergio Leone, whose father, Roberto Roberti, directed some of
Bertini's finest performances. Italian with English subtitles.
