Feng Xiaoning's epic biopic recounts the story of Gada Meilin, a Mongolian tribesman who struggled to protect the Horqin grasslands from desertification in the 1930's. Through his battles with local government officials and his tribe's chieftan Meilin has come to be regarded as a kind of modern day folk hero.
