Language Information

Breton is spoken in Brittany, the peninsula of westernmost France lying between the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. It is the only Celtic language spoken on the European continent, having been brought from Cornwall and South Wales in the 5th and 6th centuries by Britons fleeing from Saxon invaders. Today there are fewer than one million speakers of Breton. It has no official status in France and even in Brittany it is not used in the schools.

Translation

Once there was an old fisherman whose wife was pregnant. One evening he returned home having caught nothing. But his wife wanted some fish to eat, so he had to return right away to the shore. He cast his nets and landed a magnificent fish. He was delighted-for the time being at least, he said to himself, my wife will give me a little peace. But just as he was about to bring in the fish, the fish began to speak, saying, "When I am dead, give my flesh to your wife to eat; my heart and the water I will be washed in to your mare; and my entrails and my lungs to your dog."
