In the long list of Indian directors, Bimal Roy was a true original. He was one of the few directors who could sell his film by placing his name before its title. It is highly improbable there will be another film maker like Bimal Roy. He was totally Indian in his vision of society, its aspirations - yet seemed to belong to the whole world.
