Danish filmmaker Bille August (Pelle the Conquerer) directs Ingmar Bergman's autobiographical screenplay about the early courtship, marriage and discord of Bergman's parents. Set between 1909 and 1918, The Best Intentions follows Henrik Bergman (Samuel Froler), an emotionally neutral Lutheran pastor, and the vivacious Anna Akerblom (Pernilla August). August and Bergman beautifully delineate the conflicts that arise between Henrik's spartan lifestyle and Anna's demands for possessions. Winner of the 1992 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film festival. Pernilla August won the Best Actress award. Cinematography by Jorgen Persson. With Max von Sydow, Ghita Norby and Lennart Hjulstrom. Swedish with English subtitles.
