Always By My Side is a comforting, rhyming story written to help children understand that a father's love is forever, even if they grow up without his presence in their lives. This beautifully illustrated book conveys the heart-warming message to children that even though a father is not in their lives, he is still part of them. They will realize that they are like him in character, looks and actions; that his spirit surrounds them in their day-to-day activities, and helps to make them who they are.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—In this story about living with the loss of a father, children of various ethnicities are shown doing everyday activities while the narrator reassures them that their father is always with them even though he has passed on. He's in leaves, barking dogs, gestures, and more, watching them grow and protecting them. Some images are active (e.g., a girl frolicking down a hill of wildflowers), while others dwell on quieter moments, such as a child brushing her teeth before bed or a youngster in a loving embrace with her mother. While the narrative remains gentle throughout, the rich illustrations in lively patterns balance out the somber tone. Both the words and the images acknowledge how life goes on even in grief and that tiny and big moments alike can be full of memories and meaning.—Jennifer Miskec, Longwood University, Farmville, VA
Review
Always By My Side is a rhyming children's picture book with a profound message - even though a father may not be physically present, his love for his sons and daughters stays forever. Though work, duty, divorce, or death may separate a father (Always By My Side never specifies), the special bond he shares with his children is part of every day and every moment. Warm, colorful illustrations complement this emotional and inspirational picture book, highly recommended.

Always by My Side empowers parents and children to deal with an absent dad, whether it is from death, a military deployment, divorce, or even travel. It provides kids with language to remember that they are connected through their imagination, the world around them, and the ways in which they resemble their dad. It is an excellent resource for any child missing a father who is not with them. It is certainly a must for school libraries and child therapists alike." - Erik Wecks, Geekdad.com

"Always By My Side" celebrates the idea that the child growing up without the living presence of her father can still accept that "My daddy is in me and everywhere... he's just here in a different way." Beautifully told in quiet verse and filled with joyous rainbow illustrations of children of different races growing up surrounded with beauty and love, "Always By My Side" is a gentle explanation of the unexplainable for children... Always present is the idea that the gift of life is meant to be treasured. Presents a healing experience for both parent and child."

"We were touched by the premise of Susan Kerner's new book Always By My Side. After losing her husband just 10 months into their marriage, and two months into her pregnancy, Kerner came up with the idea of a book for kids who have experienced loss or separation. It's appropriate for children who are coping with more than just death, and it is applicable to divorce, deployment, or any other challenging circumstances as well." - POPSUGAR
