| Brief Description: | Opto-electronics and electro-optic devices and processes are becoming increasingly important for the techniques of measurement, control, regulation, supervision, security and communication, as well as for data processing. These various branches have led to a specialized terminology that cannot be found either in standard dictionaries or in electronics dictionaries. Therefore, this dictionary, covering the relevant physical aspects, materials used and devices as well as instruments and their components, together with the many applications that have now become standardized, meets an important need.
The compilation of this dictionary is based on the author's many years of experience in both the theory and the practice of opto-electronics and electro-optics, including extensive study of the relevant literature. The latest developments have been taken into account as far as possible. In order to limit the size of this dictionary to some degree, expressions consisting of combinations of basic terms have been excluded but these can easily be composed from the basic terms if required. Occasionally, specific expressions, in particular those used in industry, have been included when they are not established physical terms. This dictionary will assist many users when reading foreign-language literature and it will also be a welcome tool for those carrying out translations. |
