The author has examined numerous reliable scientific and technical textbooks, handbooks, reference works, periodicals, glossaries, catalogues, brochures and other documents. The resulting dictionary contains 2,741 specific terms, plus synonyms and variants. All English/American entries are listed alphabetically with their equivalents in French, German, Spanish, Dutch and, where appropriate, Latin. An alphabetical list for each language is also included so that corresponding translations may be readily found. Certain terms are followed by a short definition in English and/or a qualifying label indicating the field in which they are used.
Special attention has been devoted to such areas as: sugar beet and sugar cane growing, agricultural machines, diseases, weeds and pests, beet and sugar cane manufacture (processes and machines), types of sugar, economic terms, international sugar organizations, EEC terminology of sugar regulations. Elsevier's Sugar Dictionary therefore facilitates communication between all those involved, directly or indirectly, in the manufacture or marketing of cane and beet sugar: growers, manufacturers of insecticides and agricultural equipment, sugar technologists, sugar plant designers and manufacturers, sugar brokers, sugar research institutes, translators and interpreters. |
