| Brief Description: | Includes three works. All Orientals Look the Same is a brief
exploration of the title phrase, which takes a common misperception
and turns it on its head. It provokes the viewer to confront his or
her own prejudices and misconceptions about Asian-Pacific Americans
and the contradictions inherent in those beliefs. Scratch Video is a
short piece which looks at some of the true sources of allergies,
itching and repressed reactions. New Year, Parts 1 & 2 combines
hand-drawn illustrations and found footage to show the conflict of a
child caught between her Chinese-American heritage and the
expectations created by stereotypical Hollywood images of Asians.
Clips of Charlie Chan, Fu Manchu and Suzie Wong illustrate the point. |
