Xhosa is spoken principally in the Transkei territory of South Africa, which borders Lesotho and faces the Indian Ocean. It is another of the Bantu languages with about 8 million speakers. The Xhosas have intermingled with the Hottentots and their language contains some of the Hottentot "click" sounds. The Xh at the beginning of their name represents one of these sounds.
