to a bourgeois family that falsely promises him an education, he
secretly learns to read on his own and sets off on a series of land
and sea voyages. During these excursions Gorky sees that the poverty
and misery he has continually suffered are facts of everyday life for
most of the Russian people. With this recognition he encounters the
