| Brief Description: | Based on material developed by the author for his course at Harvard University, Elementary Vietnamese is a complete language course designed for either self-study or college-level classroom use. The text consists of two parts. The first part is a pronunciation guide that introduces the phonetic system of the Vietnamese language based on the Hanoi dialect and spellings. This guide includes descriptions of the Vietnamese sounds, the comparison of phonological similarities, and difference between the Hanoi and Saigon dialects. The second part is composed of fourteen lessons consisting of short dialogues relating to the lesson's cultural theme, new vocabulary, and exercises. Examples of Vietnamese advertisements and newspapers are used throughout the lessons. Also included in the text is a Vietnamese-English glossary and an English-Vietnamese glossary that include all the words and the most frequent combinations used in the lessons. |
