Introduction

Sibo is spoken by a mere 40,000 people in Northwestern China. An offshoot of the now extinct Manchu language, it is a member of the Tungusic branch of the Altaic family of languages. The vertical Sibo script is similar to the Manchu, which in turn was adapted from the Uigur script in the 13th century.

Once upon a time there was a farmer living in the vicinity of the mountains. In the mountains there always appeared tigers which caused harm to animals. One rainy night the farmer's house was leaking everywhere. The farmer was very angry. He did not know what to do. Later when the rain let up he wanted to take a rest. Then he said, "I'm not afraid of the sky and I'm not afraid of the earth, but I am afraid of the leaking!"
