Chuvash is spoken in Russia's middle Volga region, especially in the Chuvash republic whose capital is Cheboksary. Though it is one of the Turkic languages, it differs markedly from the other members of this family, and the question of it's affiliation was long a matter of dispute. There are about 1½ million speakers.***

Chuvash speakers form over two -thirds of the population of Chuvashia, in the middle volga valley, with its capital at Cheboksary.

In Chuvashia itself two dialects are commonly recognised, Anatri or downstream and Viryal or upstream. Literally, Chuvash is based on Anatri.

The leafy trees, bathed in pure morning dew and dried in the soft wind, make a beautiful scene. They catch your eye wherever you look. The trees are everywhere. All sorts grow on the earth, there is plenty of room here for every kind of plant. You can see some in the orchards where they enjoy the grassy fertile soil. Others you can see lined up in front of the houses like guards. Even the ravine dividing the village is crowded with tall willow trees. Only down at the bottom a tiny bridge with low railings makes a gate in the wall of them. The trees and bushes seem to have conquered the whole ravine. Even at noon the rays of the sun struggle fiercely to get through the thick branches to the shaded roots.
